Codename "Eaglestone" is just the latest example of work done to bridge Microsoft technologies with Eclipse. Released as a public Beta download, Eaglestone is designed to allow developers working with the Eclipse integrated development environment (IDE) to leverage the next iteration of Visual Studio Team Foundation Server. With codename "Eaglestone," devs will be able to take advantage of an Eclipse plug-in and cross-platform command-line client for Visual Studio 2010 Team Foundation Server.

"You can use Visual Studio Team Explorer 2010 codename ‘Eaglestone’ and Visual Studio Team Foundation Server as part of your development processes with Eclipse to provide work item tracking, version control, and automated builds. You must install either the Team Foundation Server plug-in for Eclipse or the Cross-platform Command-line Client for Team Foundation Server before you can use those features, " Microsoft stated.

According to the Redmond company, developers will be able to use the Visual Studio Team Explorer 2010 codename "Eaglestone" with Apple Mac OS X, HP-UX, IBM AIX, Linux, Solaris, Unix, Windows 7 Windows Vista, and Windows XP SP2 and SP3. Microsoft is even providing guidance for customers that need a little help getting started with the plug-in via the "Installing the Team Foundation Server Plug-in and the Command-line Client" resource.

Additional notable moves from Microsoft to embrace Eclipse have been made most recently in October 2009. Following the launch of the latest iteration of its Windows client, Microsoft tapped Tasktop Technologies Inc. from Canada to build Eclipse interoperability with Windows 7 and Window Server 2008 R2. At the same time, the Redmond company worked with France-based Soyatec on Windows Azure Tools for Eclipse. The software giant promised that the Windows Azure Tools for Eclipse would enable PHP developers building projects with Eclipse to put together Cloud applications for Windows Azure.
