Video game developer Codemasters has revealed how the safety car, one of the most important outside influences in a Formula 1 race, will be simulated in the upcoming F1 2011 video game simulation.

Stephen Hood, who is the main designer working on F1 2011, has stated, “Safety car - a lot of people have been asking us for it. We’d always said we’d only do it when it was absolutely right, so now it’s available in single player and multiplayer.”

Paul Jean, who is a senior producer at Codemasters, has added, “It’s the wild card in the pack. Maybe you’re out in front, maybe you think you’re out the points, and then this key event comes in. Can you dive into the pits and get a lap advantage on everyone else? You have to keep the distance to the car in front of you and behind, you need to do the weaving sequences to keep your tyres up to temperature.”

The developers have limited the time that the safety car can spend on the track in order to make sure that no boredom sets in while players wait for the real racing to restart but other than that F1 2011 will try to be as close to the real world as possible.

Hood also talked about the impact that two new systems will make in a race, with players now required to master both the KERS system, which allows for a boost to the acceleration on some segments of the track, and the DRS, which makes the car better able to pass another one.

F1 2011 will also simulate the new Pirelli made tires, which have also had a big impact on races.

The launch date for F1 2011 on the PlayStation 3, the Xbox 360 and the PC is set for September 23 and the game will also get Nintendo 3DS and Vita versions.
