Cloud security has been always one of the main concerns when it came to choosing a specific cloud service or a provider or another.

As much as people are interested in learning more on how secure an offering is when compared to another, there is also the issue of cloud security standards and how well they apply in a specific situation.

Moreover, there’s also the issue of whom or how many people are involved in the development of cloud security standards and best practices.

According to Tim Rains, director, Trustworthy Computing, Microsoft, there are many those who ask questions in this area.

“The underlying concern is that when too many people get involved, the process of developing new standards becomes too bureaucratic and progress is slower than it should be,” he notes.

“But, the process has to be inclusive enough so that important nuances from different markets and industries are not overlooked. This balance needs to be carefully managed.”

In the latest video in the Cloud Fundamentals Series, Rains discusses collaboration with Tim Mather, advisory director at KPMG, who has been working on cloud data governance with the Cloud Security Alliance.

According to Tim Mather, “the collaboration between industry is important, but collaboration with standards organizations, collaboration with government agencies, and collaboration with user groups is also very important.”

“I think that the problem it poses however is that effectively you have almost too many cooks in the kitchen. And so the issue becomes not only collaboration but how you focus that collaboration so that it actually can move in near real-time,” he also notes.

Those who are interested in industry collaboration on cloud security standards can learn more on his perspective on the topic from the latest installment of the Cloud Fundamentals Video Series from Microsoft’s Trustworthy Computing, which can be seen embedded below.
