Nuvola Player, a web interface for cloud music services that runs in its own window and provides integration with a Linux desktop, is now at version 2.4.2.

Nuvola is a player that focuses on the new media services that will soon replace local libraries, like Google Play or Grooveshark. Basically, this is just a frontend for online libraries and users don’t need to have anything stored locally.

Nuvola Player provides instant access to the music, shows notifications with currently playing song, uses the MPRIS interface, has docking capabilities, and integrates into the Unity launcher.

According to the changelog, a bug that occurred when MPRIS clients weren't notified on the metadata changes has been fixed, a build error with --no-lastfm flag (always require json-glib-1.0 dependency) has been fixed, the test suite is no longer failing under Fedora's mock tool, a workaround has been implemented to get rid of the ABOUT protocol source missing dialog, and a memory leak has been closed in the Media Player Remote Interface.

If you are using Ubuntu, installing the latest version of Nuvola Player is actually quite simple because the developers are providing a PPA. All you have to do is to enter these commands in a terminal (you will need to be root):

code
sudo add-apt-repository ppa:nuvola-player-builders/stable
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get upgrade
sudo apt-get install nuvolaplayer
