Clonezilla Live 2.2.2-16, a Linux distribution based on DRBL, Partclone, and udpcast that allows users to do bare metal backup and recovery, has been released and is available for testing and download.

Clonezilla Live is a Linux distribution that does only one thing: bare metal backup and recovery. It's very similar to other older cloning software, such as True Image or Norton Ghost.

As you might expect, Clonezilla Live provides support for a large number of file systems, which include ext2, ext3, ext4, reiserfs, reiser4, xfs, jfs, btrfs of GNU/Linux, FAT12, FAT16, FAT32, NTFS, HFS+ from Mac OS, UFS of FreeBSD, NetBSD, and OpenBSD, minix of Minix, and VMFS3 and VMFS5 of VMWare ESX.

As usual, the latest version of Clonezilla Live is based on the most recent version of the Debian Sid repository, which dates from February 24, 2014.

Also, the Linux kernel has been updated to version 3.13.4-1, which is almost the most recent version made available.

Highlights of Clonezilla Live 2.2.2-16: • drbl has been upgraded to version 2.7.28-drbl1 and clonezilla has been updated to version 3.9.33-drbl1; • The function parse_cmdline_option (drbl-functions) has been updated in order to accept all print characters ([[:print:]]). The distribution now uses eval to run ocs_prerun* and ocs_postrun*; • The prompt about running syslinux in "stupid" mode in makeboot.sh has been updated by adding "-d syslinux"; • The way "scale=0" has been used in ocs-expand-mbr-pt and a better method is now in use; • The Toram menu for the GRUB is now using toram=filesystem.squashfs instead of toram, so that it's consistent with that used by syslinux; • The boot media is no longer mounted again in the read-write mode; • The example "clone-multiple-usb-example.sh" has been removed because it was already in the main menu; • An example gen-rec-usb has been added. The developers have explained that it could be used to create a recovery USB flash drive directly from the machine; • An option -q has been added to ocs-live-dev. With this option, it's possible to use the existing image on the recovery device.

The developers normally release quite a few development versions of Clonezilla Live before deciding to do a stable one. This is just the first build in the new devel cycle and more are sure to arrive.

A complete list of changes, improvements, and fixes can be found in the official announcement. Download Clonezilla Live 2.2.2-16 right now from Softpedia.

Remember that this is a development version and it should NOT be installed on production machines. It is intended for testing purposes only.
