Guns make a game great thinks the developer

Cliff Bleszinski is currently one of the most popular game developers in the business. Having worked at Epic Games for quite some time now, he is the mind behind the extremely successful Gears of War series of games, which saw the second title released the past weekend.

His casual attitude has earned him quite a superstar reputation, one which he indeed deserves for bringing fans such popular games. Starting off with just a few ideas scribbled on a piece of paper but with big dreams, the young developer fought his way onto the Epic team, where he really shined in terms of gameplay ideas and graphic design.

He recently talked with Gamepro about the holiday lineup of games which would grace almost every platform this upcoming Christmas season. He went on to say that Dead Space and Left 4 Dead are definitely titles which he would pick up because he is such a fan of survival games. Then, he approached the very anticipated title Mirror's Edge, but thinks that it might need more guns, because they are a big motivator.

“Fable II looks cool. And Resident Evil 5 is next year, right? I'm dying for that, I loved RE4. Street Fighter IV looks sick, and Dead Space also looks solid. I'm a fan of horror games -- I loved Event Horizon and all of those movies, so they're making Dead Space for guys like me. That's my genre, and it looks great. I think Mirror's Edge will be great, too, but they're showing me too much parkour, I want to see the gunplay. I hope it's not all just running and jumping. As long as there's something chasing me... even Mario had Goombas, you know?”

Quite some interesting ideas, but Mirror's Edge is a game that really highlights the lack of guns and emphasizes the fact that they aren't needed in order to win battles against enemies. Let's just be happy that Cliff didn't work on the development team of Mirror's Edge or we might have seen a very different game.
