With more and more video game oriented sites attacked and more personal data stolen it seems that even game designers are now aware of the problem and a bit scared about the possible consequences.
Speaking to Industry Gamers
Cliff Bleszinski, who is one of the more outspoken video game designers, has stated that the PlayStation Network hack that happened in late April was a bad experience for the entire video game industry, exclaiming, “It [expletive]-ing sucked!”.
He then added, “It’s just a shame. It cost them an untold amount of money; I know developers who couldn’t put their betas out there because of it. I mean, it was a major problem. So it’s pretty scary to be a game developer, especially when you talk about there being a connected future.”
Bleszinski might be a little affected by the fact that the official website and the forums of the Epic Games studio have also been hacked early in June, with the unknown assailants managing to gain access to emails, names and passwords.
Epic says that no sensitive data was stolen from its servers.
The video game industry has been hit by a spade of attacks during the last few months, with a number of hacker groups apparently interested in doing attacks similar to those launched against the PSN.
Recently Bethesdda, SEGA, EVE Online and Minecraft were affected and it seems that usual suspects Anonymous and LulzSec have been joined by other smaller groups.
At the moment Epic Games is working on Gears of War 3, the latest entry in the very successful series that is exclusive to the Xbox 360.
Hackers gaining access to the Epic Games website could lead to them getting access to the final code for the game.
It would be a disaster for the company and for Microsoft for the Gears of War 3 code to be posted on pirate sites before the official launch date.
