Apple says the best way to keep your Mac in top shape is to maintain it yourself

Mac users are no strangers to cleaning utilities, and while some solutions are better than others, the consensus among power users is that these apps are useless, if not harmful to your Mac.

A thread titled “should I buy clean my mac 2 or is there another app I should use?” was started on April 8, 2013 over at Apple Support Communities and now has over 25K views, with only 10 replies.

Most of the commenters seem to be power users who are well informed about the risks involving cleaning utilities. Whether or not you believe what these users are saying, Apple has some winning advice for you.

“The best way to keep your Mac running in top form is to update your system software periodically, back up your system, and perform some regular maintenance.”

This includes archiving large files (and the files that you don’t use very often), deleting unnecessary files and emptying the trash, etc. Apple says all you need is backups and a bit of wisdom and you’ll be just fine. And everyone else seems to agree. What’s your take on this?
