The Brothers in Arms franchise developed by Gearbox Software and published by Ubisoft isn't going just into a new direction, with the recently announced Furious 4, as a 'classic' game, following the main protagonists of the series, Sgt. Baker and his company, will arrive after the next one.

Gearbox Software is working on many projects lately, with Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 being just one of the many titles it's trying to finish, alongside Borderlands 2 or Aliens: Colonial Marines.

But what really surprised fans of the World War II tactical shooter franchise was how vastly different Furious 4, which draws heavy inspiration from the Inglourious Basterds movie, was to the earlier games in the series, like Hell's Highway or Road to Hill 30.

Instead of retelling in a pretty historically-accurate way glorious battles from the Second World War, the new Brothers in Arms game is telling the purely fictional adventures of a group of Allied soldiers trying to take down Adolf Hitler.

But, according to Gearbox Software boss Randy Pitchford, a regular Brothers in Arms game is coming, after Furious 4 is released.

Asked by GameSpot whether or not the new game marks the end of the adventures of Sgt. Baker, Pitchford replied that, "We're going to do more of that, absolutely, that's happening."

The Gearbox boss continued, saying that the studio and Ubisoft believe the franchise can accommodate more than one narrative thread, as well as less than historically-accurate adventures, like the ones in Furious 4.

The upcoming game was confirmed back at E3 2011 in June, through a pretty impressive trailer.

"Set in World War II, Brothers in Arms Furious 4 is a brutal first person shooter that offers an exciting campaign mode playable with up to four players in co-op, as well as an extensive competitive multiplayer mode," Ubisoft said about the game.

"The story follows four fierce and fearless warriors tracking the Führer himself. As one of the Furious 4, players will use special weaponry and unexpected combat abilities to fight the greatest threat the world has ever faced: an experimental Nazi army conceived in secret by the Third Reich."

Brothers in Arms: Furious 4 is scheduled to appear for the PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 early next year.
