ClamTk 5.07, a GUI frontend for ClamAV using Perl and Gtk libraries developed to make the life of Linux users a lot easier, is now available for download.

Most Linux users don't need antivirus applications installed on their systems and, in fact, there are very few apps of this kind. This entire business never really took off on Linux for obvious reasons, but users might need an antivirus solution from time to time.

Let's say, for example, that you have a dual-boot configuration, with Windows and Linux as the systems. If your Windows installation becomes compromised, it might be impossible to scan and disinfect it if the problem is severe. A simple solution is to boot in your Linux system and scan the folders and files from there.

ClamTk is basically a frontend of ClamAV, which runs in a terminal. Most users prefer a friendly interface and ClamTk provides that functionality. Once installed, it becomes available in the right-click menu, making it easier to scan certain folders with just one click.

According to the changelog, a fix has been implemented to make ClamTk show up again in Dash and other areas, the tooltips in the Settings panel have been improved, a minor fix has been added to wording in the Update panel, the locale files permissions have been standardized, and some extra arguments have been added to the scanning function to avoid any accidents.

Also, zenity is no longer a dependency and a number of smaller fixes have been implemented as well. A few of the language files have been updated, like Arabic (ar), German (de), Azerbaijani (az), English (en_AU), Galician (gl), French (fr), Tamil (ta), Ukrainian (uk), Uzbek (uz), Finnish (fi), Romanian (ro), Spanish (es), Hebrew (he), Asturian (ast), Czech (cz), Dutch (nl), Malay (ms), and Slovak (sk).

The installation of the application is quite simple and most users won't have a problem with it. There is only one thing that needs to be done after the application is started for the first time. To limit the size of the package, the developer doesn't include virus definitions and they need to be downloaded as soon as possible.

The interface of the ClamTk application is very straightforward and allows even beginners to use it even if they have never seen a Linux system before.
