City of Heroes Launches for Mac

NCsoft has announced the official launch of City of Heroes for the Macintosh. The fictional world of Paragon City and the Rogue Isles are open for both PC and Mac gamers to immerse themselves into. The Mac Special Edition includes the client, 30 days of game time, and exclusive in-game items, NCsoft says.

“What’s the only thing as good as City of Heroes on the PC? City of Heroes on the Macintosh, of course! NCsoft is proud to announce the availability of our super-powered MMO on the Mac for those players out there who choose to make it their gaming console of choice. The Mac Special Edition is a digital-only download, and includes special in-game items that you’re not going to want to miss out on,” a message on the official City of Heroes website reads.

Back in December (2008) we reported that a deal struck by NCsoft and TransGaming would have Mac users joining a battle of good versus evil in the most popular comic book MMO available on PC and Mac, City of Heroes. NCsoft noted then that an open beta for the Mac version of City of Heroes was imminent. The company was able to port City of Heroes to the Mac thanks to TransGaming's Cider Portability Engine, which acts as a “wrapper” around the game software, enabling it to run seamlessly on Intel-based Macs.

“Our community is excited that City of Heroes is coming to Mac,” Brian Clayton, executive producer of City of Heroes for NCsoft West, says. “We are thrilled to offer avid Mac fans the ability to play the most robust comic-book inspired MMO on the market.”

As a player, you will be tasked with creating your own hero or villain. Millions of other players worldwide will be doing the same thing, so, as soon as you're done creating the character, you can join them and band together in Supergroups. Alternately, City of Heroes players can venture alone in the MMO.
