Customers must download the revised app from iTunes, says the bank

Citibank has formally acknowledged a flaw in its iPad application after months of overcharging customers due to a bug that caused roughly 2 percent of transactions to repeat themselves.

A flaw was discovered and reported as early as Summer 2011, when Citi received a number of anonymous complaints via the iTunes App Store review system.

It hadn’t been attributed to the standalone app, but there was a fair chance the binary was to blame.

Andrew Brent, a Citibank spokesman, confirmed in an email that the bank was only able to fix the bug months later, when it discovered that the bug was not on its server side, but in the Citibank iPad app.

In late December, Citi issued an update and fixed the flaw. The bank has alerted affected users and reimbursed them for the extra, as well as any incurred fees.

"We take seriously the functionality of our products and services as well as the satisfaction of our clients," Brent stated in an email, according to TheHuffingtonPost.com.

"Upon discovering a technical bug in our Citibank for iPad app had caused a limited number of clients to encounter duplicate payments and/or transfers, we immediately fixed the technical issue. Even more important, we have reached out to clients who were impacted to ensure their individual situations are resolved completely," said Brent.

Customers who use the Citibank iPad app must ensure they have the latest version installed.

Citibank for iPad 1.5 is available free of charge in the iTunes App Store. The changelog for the new version simply states “bug fixes.”

Besides allowing you to make transactions, the mobile app lets you view and manage your Citibank accounts with rich displays and charts that make it easy to monitor your finances and track your cash flow.

You can use it to learn how people spend their money, immerse yourself in personal finance and money management, and view your account balances and recent activity.
