Despite reports to the contrary, Bobbi Kristina Brown, who has been in a coma since January 31, 2015, is not showing signs of significant improvement. Cissy Houston, her grandmother, is setting the record straight in a statement saying she has “irreversible brain damage” and remains unresponsive.

Krissi is, however, out of the medically induced coma she was put in when she was rushed to the hospital after being found submerged in the bathtub of her Georgia home. Doctors confirm this through a statement from Bobby Brown’s attorney: she will live, but the quality of her life won’t be determined for years to come.

“Global and irreversible brain damage”

Over the weekend, Krissi’s father Bobby Brown, who has resumed touring, told concertgoers that his daughter was “awake,” which was soon confirmed by aunt Tina Brown. This sparked fresh hope in the millions who had been praying for the 22-year-old daughter of the late Whitney Houston, since January, when paramedics were summoned to her home.

The initial prognosis was bleak, with doctors saying that nothing short of a miracle could save her, because her brain had been deprived of oxygen for far too long. One attempt of bringing her out of the coma triggered violent seizures, so doctors decided to let time have its say in her odds of coming out.

Hearing both Bobby and Tina say that Krissi was awake and off life support meant confirmation that she was finally getting better.

That’s not necessarily accurate, Cissy Houston says in a statement to People Magazine.

“While she is no longer in a medically induced coma she has a tracheotomy and according to the doctors she has global and irreversible brain damage and remains unresponsive,” the aging singer says. “Meeting with the doctors and understanding that she can live in this condition for a lifetime truly saddens me.”

Bobbi Kristina will live

Cissy doesn’t offer more details about her granddaughter’s condition, but she pleads with those who had prayed for her before to continue doing so. God will answer their prayers eventually, she adds.

In a separate statement to the same media outlet, Bobby Brown details Krissi’s condition through his lawyer: she is out of the coma, but she is not responsive. She will live. In fact, the statement adds, she is expected to live “a long life,” but the quality of it won’t be determined for many years to come.

Bobbi Kristina is now in the middle of what will prove to be a very long “rehabilitation process,” the attorney adds.

Hours after the statement was released, Bobby Brown was photographed outside the rehabilitation center where Bobbi Kristina is, talking to doctors, presumably about the future.
