Cisco has entered a definitive agreement to acquire Sourcefire, a company that provides intelligent cybersecurity solutions, for around $2.7 billion (€2 billion).

Cisco believes that by combining its own solutions with Sourcefire technology, it can provide customers comprehensive protection against cyberattacks.

Sourcefire’s portfolio includes next-generation firewalls, intrusion prevention systems, and advanced malware protection.

“’Buy' has always been a key part of our build-buy-partner innovation strategy,” commented Hilton Romanski, vice president of Cisco Corporate Development.

“Sourcefire aligns well with Cisco's future vision for security and supports the key pillars of our security strategy. Through our shared view of the critical role the network must play in cybersecurity and threat defense, we have a unique opportunity to deliver the most comprehensive approach to security in the market.”

The acquisition process will be completed in the second half of the calendar year 2013. Before the deal is closed, Sourcefire and Cisco will operate as separate companies.
