The Linux Mint project is constantly working to improve the operating systems they are developing, along with the Cinnamon desktop environment. A new major update for Cinnamon is expected to land pretty soon, and it will come with lots of new features and changes.

The leader of the Linux Mint team, Clement Lefebvre, has just published a short newsletter for the month of April and he revealed some very exciting news, including the launch of the Cinnamon 2.6, the next major update for the famous operating system. Not everyone knows this, but Cinnamon is made by the same people who are working on Linux Mint, which means that they can also provide the best experience for it.

What’s even better, each new Cinnamon release usually lands pretty soon in the existing Linux Mint releases, and it's likely that the same will happen for the next edition. A precise date hasn't been revealed for Cinnamon 2.6, but it will probably land by the end of May.

Cinnamon 2.6 is a big update

As you can imagine, most updates for desktop environments are pretty big. Some have more features than others, but they always advance the desktop. It might not seem at first glance that Cinnamon 2.6 is a major improvement, but history has shown us that the Linux Mint team doesn't slap a new version number if it's not important.

"Cinnamon 2.6 will reach feature-freeze mid-May and become stable at the end of the month. It’s already full of improvements and new features but there are a couple of very important sub-projects we wanted to put in it: The ability for users to change whether Cinnamon works with consolekit or logind without recompiling, a queue for file operations in Nemo so they can be performed one after the other, actual screensavers in cinnamon-screensaver (we've got support for xscreensaver and webkit screensavers already, we need to work on the configuration UI)… etc," wrote Clement Lefebvre on the official website.

He also explained that MATE 1.10 will soon be implemented in Linux Mint and that Linux Mint 17.2 "Rafaela" should land by the end of June.
