Cinnamon, a Linux desktop environment developed by the same guys who are also responsible for Linux Mint, will be getting some very important new features with the next 2.6 version that will be out soon.

Each new major Cinnamon update usually brings quite a few changes, but the upcoming 2.6 version promises to be a very interesting one. The developers have been making numerous improvements, like the support for systemd, but it looks that lot more is incoming. Because this is a desktop environment, many of the features added by the developer will be visible immediately.

Cinnamon has been getting many fans in the couple of years and the success of the Linux Mint distro has made this desktop environment one of the most used. The fact that it can be easily installed in other distros as well, like Arch Linux or Ubuntu, has contributed to its fame. The devs are not slowing down and Cinnamon 2.6 is definitely something to watch out for.

Cinnamon is a massive update

The previous 2.4 upgrade for Cinnamon was quite interesting, but 2.6 will be even better, with stuff like panel support for multiple monitors, an easy way to switch and add search provides, support for client-side-decorated windows, and a few other things.

"You can now add panels to every monitor, and configure them each individually.  Many thanks to dalcde for all the effort and time he put into this - it adds an entirely new dimension to the desktop. After upgrading, your panels should be essentially as they were before, but if you check the panel menu, you'll notice an extra entry, Modify Panel. You can quickly perform a number of actions from this menu - adding a new panel, moving or deleting.  If you click Add Panel, you'll get on-screen guidance to allow you to choose where to place the new panel," wrote the Cinnamon developers.

The devs have also added an overlay that is displayed when the multimedia keys are pressed, and the tiling overlays and previews have been refined as well. More details about the upcoming Cinnamon 2.6 release can be found in the official announcement.
