A day after the media exposed Salman Khan's alleged links with the underworld, protests from all over India forced several cinema halls to stop screening his film "Maine Pyar Kyon Kiya", on the first day of its release.

Moviegoers from Maharashtra, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand and West Bengal were urged not to watch Khan's movie, as organizations like BJP, VHP, Bajrang Dal and Trinamool Congress raised slogans, held demonstrations, and ripped some of the posters outside several cinema halls.

Bollywood actor Salman Khan was born in India, on December 27, 1968, as the son of the legendary writer Salim Khan (Sholay, Deewar, Don).

The Bollywood hunk made his acting debute in 1988 with a supporting role in the movie "Biwi Ho To Aisi". The 1989 romantic hit Maine Pyar Kiya made him the heart throb of Indian cinema.

Salma, who also played different parts in movies like Saajan (1991), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Hum Aapke Hain Koun! (1994), Karan Arjun (1995), Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), or Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), was arrested by the local police from the shooting location of Hum Saath-Saath Hain: We Stand United (1999).

He was suspected of killing protected wild animals and spent about a week behind the bars. Three years ago, the actor crashed his Land Cruiser near the American Express bakery in Bandra, killing one man and injuring others.
In 2003, one year after the incident, he managed to revive his career with his interpretation in Terre Naam.

Last year, the actor won the appreciation of the World Health Organization (WHO) for presenting the problems of AIDS patient in today's world, after he portrayed an AIDS patient in Phir Milenge.

The current allegations on Salman's connections to the underworld are said to have been proved by some audiotapes purportedly containing a conversation between the actor and Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai in which he tried to convince her to join a program organized by gangster Abu Salem.
