High officials in the city of Vancouver in British Columbia, Canada are pleased to announce that the cigarette butts recycling program that debuted in this urban area towards the end of 2013 is going according to plan.

According to Earth 911, it was back in November 2013 when a total of 110 so-called Butt Bins were installed on as many light poles in the city.

What's more, people who smoke at home and at the office instead of on the street were asked to keep their cigarette butts and bring them over for recycling instead of simply throwing them away.

Since its debut, this initiative, dubbed the Cigarette Waste Brigade Program, has helped keep an impressive 10,000 pounds (4,536 kilograms) of butts out of landfill.

The company in charge of putting the cigarette butts to better use is TerraCycle Canada, the same source details.

More precisely, its job is to turn the cellulose acetate in them into plastic lumber and plastic pallets, and compost whatever tobacco the cigarette butts contain when they are disposed of.

Interestingly enough, TerraCycle Canada says that, judging by how well this initiative in Vancouver is going, it might not be such a bad idea to set another 2,000 Butt Bins in place.
