Don’t expect a public release soon, according to hacker Pod2G

Chronic Dev Team member Pod2g has announced on Twitter that iOS 5 has a bug that can untether the jailbreak. He expects to spend a great deal of time developing a proper exploit, but it appears that the quest for a hole in iOS 5 is over.

On Twitter, he wrote: “Hey jailbreaking friends, I’ve found a bug that can untether iOS 5. Don’t expect a release soon, but I’m gonna work hard in it. [sic]”

The news should also help put a stop to all the “untethered” iOS 5 jailbreaks and unlocks being advertised by various questionable web sites.

As noted in the past, the only people you can expect a reliable jailbreak solution from are either the iPhone Dev Team, or Chronic Dev, and their respective team members who sometimes work individually.

As you may know, hacking geniuses Geohot and Comex have been snagged by Facebook and Apple respectively, so don’t expect any more jailbreaks from them.

With that out of the way, should this untethered jailbreak come via Chronic Dev, the jailbreak tool to be updated with the iOS 5 ‘untether’ is Greenpois0n.

However, some speculate that Pod2G might implement the exploit in a web-based hack, similar to JailbreakMe.

Whatever the scenario, everyone has their hopes up for a rapid release, and support for all devices, or at least the most recent ones.

Currently, the only device that can support an untethered iOS 5 jailbreak is the old-bootrom iPhone 3GS.

According to the iPhone Dev Team, the latest version of Redsn0w does the trick. Even the iOS 5.0.1 betas are supported.

I’ll be keeping an eye on Pod2g’s progress and I’ll report to you as soon as anything new comes up. In the meanwhile, share your thoughts in the comments.

Update: removed an erroneous reference to Apple's ability to patch holes in iOS. Thanks Casper.
