A few years ago Chromebooks were a relatively unknown product, targeted at niche users, but all that has changed when Samsung introduced its ARM powered Chrome laptop, which made it to Amazon’s number #1 spot in the bestseller category.

Then other brand vendors started rolling out models and we expect to see more arrive in 2014. Part of the Chromebooks’ success is attributed to their relatively affordable price-tags of around $250 / €182.

Also, Chromebooks seem to appeal to students a lot and that’s why Dell is firstly targeting the educational sector with its first Chrome laptop ever.

And now new information posted by analyst firm NPD (via AndroidHeadlines) shows that Chromebooks are ready to take on the US commercial PC market.

According to them, Chromebooks managed to account for 20% of all notebook sales in the United States. Now we can see why Microsoft seems to be fearing the Chrome enhanced laptops and is posting commercials in an attempt to denigrate them.

Compared to sales figures last year, Chromebooks rose with 21%, driving growth for the failing notebook PC growth with 28.9%. On the other hand Windows notebook brought no contribution whatsoever and the NPD's research found that growth was flat in this particular category.

Affordable price might not be the only key factor in understanding the success of the Chromebooks. It’s probably worth-noting here, that most business and consumer users alike are turning to web-related activities when it comes to both work and play.

And if the trend intensifies, Microsoft might be faced with another great competitor and won’t have to worry only about tablets anymore, but Google too.

With more brand vendors like Toshiba and ASUS set to be joining the  Chromebook family in 2014, we can expect the rise of the Chrome-enhance laptop to continue safely on.
