Chromebooks are everywhere and every self-respecting brand vendor has one or two models out (with the exception of ASUS, but they should be made available soon).

Now fresh information coming from ABI Research claims 2.1 million Chromebooks were shipped worldwide in 2013. Out of this number, the majority (89%) were sold in North America.

As Chromebooks become increasingly popular, the firm expects a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 28% up to 11 million in 2019.

The average selling price of a Chromebook was found to be $338 / €245 and ABI Research claims this budget laptop can be thought of a “disruptive force to the portable PC market.”

Moving a little past Chromebooks, ABI Research found the PC market is still striving to hold its ground. An interesting fact is that ultraportable devices (Windows-powered versatile 2-in-1 machines) experienced a minuscule growth in 4Q 2013, despite this being the so-called “holiday season.”

The firm says Chromebooks have the potential to change the market and even if some customers aren't convinced yet, they are at least intrigued by the apparition of these budget laptops.

“There are many events that can shift the market in 2014, including the EOL of Windows XP, the adoption of Chromebooks and a stranger focus on web and cloud services.”

As a related side-note, Samsung has just announced its second-gen Chromebook models and Intel has just launched the Braswell chip platform, which will be implemented in future Chromebook offerings.
