Google is out with the latest Stable version of Chrome for Mac, Windows, and Linux computers. The general purpose of the update is to patch a flurry of bugs, but there are some platform-specific tweaks as well.

Released for all supported platforms (including iOS the other day), Chrome 40 is the newest version of the popular web browser from Google. According to the official announcement found on the Chrome Releases blog, the new build axes dozens of vulnerabilities, includes graphical changes, and even adjusts minor aspects like error messages.

A mandatory update for all

“The Chrome team is delighted to announce the promotion of Chrome 40 to the stable channel for Windows, Mac and Linux. Chrome 40.0.2214.91 contains a number of fixes and improvements,” reads the official announcement.

Specifically, these improvements include an updated info dialog on Windows and Linux, a new message for the “clock behind/ahead” error, and no less than 62 security fixes discovered (and reported to Google) by numerous researchers who were rewarded in cash.

Google highlights the work of Atte Kettunen of OUSPG, Christian Holler, cloudfuzzer and Khalil Zhani, who helped prevent security bugs from reaching the Stable channel.

Google doesn’t stress this enough, but when a new version of Chrome arrives carrying nearly six dozen fixes for security issues, the update is a must-have for the entire user base. And especially so for those who do their online shopping with the browser.
