They do say no price should ever be put on beauty or on what makes it possible. With the new Christophe Decarnin at Balmain collection of jeans, looking good and keeping up with the trends gets a very definite price – and quite spicy too – since the pants that make it up retail for more than £1,000 a pop. Still, they’re already selling like hot cakes, The Telegraph informs.

The skinny motorcycle jeans pictured here, for instance, sell for £1,060, but they are the least expensive model of the lot.

The exorbitant amount paid for such a pair, the designer says, is more than justified by the quality of the materials used, by the manufacture cost and, of course, also by the fact that countless celebrities are already big fans of these jeans. Among them, British supermodel Kate Moss, model Heidi Klum and singer Kylie Minogue are just three of the biggest stars to have taken a fancy to these jeans.

“It’s very exciting. They are swinging on the rail as you walk in the shop. I suppose there may be an absurdity over a pair of jeans costing £1,000, but our price is governed by the designer’s price. Anyway, we’ve only got two pairs left.” Imogen Crosby of Joseph, west London, where these jeans are stocked, tells The Telegraph. If all this keeps up, it’s highly likely that the entire collection sells out soon enough, even if a bleached and ripped pair sells for £1,190.

Despite their almost unbelievable price tags, the Christophe Decarnin new jeans pale in comparison to the amount paid for what is believed to be the oldest surviving pair. Dating from the late 19th century, “The Nevada Jeans,” as they were called because of where they were discovered, were purchased on eBay for the whopping sum of $46,532, so as to be placed in Levi’s fashion museum.

Lynn Downey, a blue jeans historian at the Levi’s Strauss headquarters in San Francisco, was the one who made the buy on behalf of the company. Ironically enough, the jeans are believed to have belonged to a miner, as they were part of his standard apparel.
