Pop Star Christina Aguilera is one of the judges / mentors on NBC’s new hit singing competition The Voice and she’s doing her part to promote it heavily. On a recent appearance on Matt Lauer, Christina talked about the show, what made it different from others and the very rough year she’s been having.

Much has been said and written about Aguilera, especially about the events leading up to her divorce from Jordan Bratman and what followed afterwards.

Rumors that she has a very serious drinking problem are still making the rounds as we speak, and they certainly picked up when she was arrested for public intoxication – and word got out she was so drunk she could barely stand or talk.

At one point, word had it that friends close to Christina were trying to get her in rehab, even staging a couple of (failed) interventions to make her see she had a problem that needed addressing badly.

This is what Matt asked the star during the interview, as the video below will show. Aguilera denied the reports, saying those “friends” were actually disgruntled ex-employees.

“I think there were some definite ex disgruntled employees along the way that, you know, whenever things happen like this to you, some people just want to kick you when you’re down. You know, for me, I’ve been in this business a very long time… You’re going to have your high moments and your low moments,” the singer says.

She then goes on to say she’s cut those people out of her life; right now, she’s surrounded only by friends who support her even through her darkest times without criticism.

“When you’re going through a hard time you don’t need people judging and ridiculing you. The people that are around you are going to be the ones to support you and love you through whatever you’re going through,” she says.

When Lauer points out that the people who intervened were also concerned friends, Aguilera goes on the defensive.

“Well, only I know that,” she says, pointing a finger at the host.

“Some people like the drama of creating it around you to make themselves look better, like ‘I saved her,’ when really you just have to be a friend and support,” she adds.

Below is the interview, check it out for yourself.
