Terrence Malick isn’t a director whose work is mainstream (“The Three of Life,” “To the Wonder”), but to his loyal fans, he is a true artist of the image. His latest film, “Knight of Cups,” promises to live up to his reputation as a visionary director.

The first trailer for the film has been released with the announcement that it will be opening at the Berlin Film Festival in 2015. No synopsis for it is available as of the time of writing, with the only production note on it reading just this:

“Once there was a young prince whose father, the king of the East, sent him down into Egypt to find a pearl. But when the prince arrived, the people poured him a cup. Drinking it, he forgot he was the son of a king, forgot about the pearl and fell into a deep sleep.”

“Knight of Cups” stars Christian Bale as a man who gets sucked into a world devoid of meaning but filled to the brim with temptations and the promise of instant gratification, who is struggling to find his way back to the light, from what I can gather from the trailer.

Cate Blanchett plays his wife, while Natalie Portman is the mistress. This is the film that the tabloids were covering excessively in 2012, thanks to reports from the set that Portman was furious at Bale for being so Method that he never broke character in between takes – which she found tedious and pretentious and absolutely annoying.

Admittedly, she threatened Malick that she’d walk if Bale didn’t.

In secondary roles, you will recognize Antonio Banderas, Brian Dennehy, Freida Pinto, Isabel Lucas, Teresa Palmer, Wes Bentley, Imogen Poots, and Ben Kingsley (his voice, more like it). Check out the trailer.
