Even though it starred relative unknowns, J.J. Abrams' 2009 “Star Trek” was one of the best movies released that year, as well as one that fans (Trekkies) approved of. With the sequel slated for release in May 2013, there's a lot of speculation about how it might play out.

Abrams is famous for keeping a lid on his projects until the date of release. To give you an idea of how mysterious he is, he won't even allow his cast to talk about the plot of the sequel or certain characters that may appear in it.

For instance, Benedict Cumberbatch has been cast in it and no one seems to know what role he will play. It is assumed, though, that he'll be a villain.

In this context, it's a small wonder that Chris Pine is proving so talkative these days. Granted, he's not saying too much about the sequel, but at least fans it gives something to digest until Comic-Con later this month, when more on the film will most likely be revealed.

For starters, Chris talked to Ain't It Cool News about the plot and the 3D of the film. The bottom line is that we should expect an even better film than the first one and, considering that one was excellent, this raises the bar sky-high.

“The movie is relentless, and for the visually inclined people who want to see major sequences, there are a couple specifically that I think… I’m not a huge 3-D fan, but I think will be incredible,” Pine says of the visuals.

The story too will be on par with the original film, if not actually better.

“But what I’m more excited about and what I think they did so well is that really the story is that much better, and the journey that these guys go on is that much more, and what they always talked about is that even though they’re a crew from what we know about the original team, the fun of getting there is following that journey to where they become that tight-knit crew,” Chris explains.

“It’s no fun if they’re already a tight-knit crew. So suffice it to say, they’re still learning how to get along,” he adds.

Fans must know that both films are chronologically set before the original television series. In other words, they're origin stories.

Pine also spoke to MTV News and dished a few details on the villain, the story Arch and character evolution. The video is embedded at the end of the article.

Pine seemed tired but, even so, completely on his guard about not revealing more than he's supposed to about the film.

“It is structured so that the antagonist brings out all of the qualities in Kirk that need to happen in order for Kirk to grow,” Chris said of Cumberbatch's villain.

“As you know from Benedict, just watching him, vocally, he's fascinating. He's got this deep resonate voice. He's a fascinating face. He's a lovely guy and just super smart. You want to see something firing in his brain, so he's not just a blood-dripping-from-the-fangs bad guy. Benedict brings those kinds of smarts,” the actor adds.
