For a few months earlier this year, Chris Evans played games with fans’ hearts by saying in no uncertain terms that he was done with the role of Steve Rogers / Captain America once “Avengers: Age of Ultron” wrapped shooting, and that another character in the Marvel cinematic universe would replace him as Captain.

He even said that he wanted to move behind the camera and pursue a career as director, because that had always been his dream. This wasn’t the first time he was saying something like this either, having detailed in previous interviews how much he hated being a cog in the Marvel money-making machine.

It is a well-known fact that accepting a multi-picture deal, though a very lucrative endeavor, becomes frustrating and crippling for most talented actors who are initially psyched about it.

Chris Evans has finally understood he can’t leave Marvel right now

Chris Evans was one of those guys who wake up one day and realized the immensity of the deal they’d agreed to years prior, and how much pressure it would mean for them for a long time to come. This is why he claimed to want out and he even badmouthed Marvel on at least a couple of occasions.

As the video below can confirm, he’s finally seen the purpose of the Marvel association: it provides him with financial security but also time (and money!) to pursue other interests, like directing.

Plus, it’s not like he could really just leave Marvel, because he’s still bound by contract to the studio for at least a few more movies. The next one is “Captain America 3,” of which Evans tells Josh Horowitz from MTV it will be everything fans want and more.

Yup, he knows the plot already. “It's this giant web of plot, where everything is connected to everything else… that's the beautiful thing and especially for the fanboys who understand these plotlines. With Cap 3, we're going to continue this excitement. Marvel doesn't disappoint. Whatever you're hoping for, you're probably going to get,” he explains.

As for leaving, Evans insists that he’s not handing off the Captain Shield anytime soon. “I'm sure it'll happen at some point, all good things have to come to an end. But I'm really happy playing the character,” he says.

Who will be Captain when Chris Evans is out?

A better look at the comic series would offer the most satisfying answer, but you can also get clues from the hints Marvel has been dropping in the cinematic universe. For instance, in “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” it was made clear that the Winter Soldier / Bucky Barnes would return sometime in the future, perhaps even in the third installment.

In the comics, Bucky is Captain for a while, so Marvel could make him so in the movies as well.

Another possibility is to make Falcon / Sam Wilson Captain, which is exactly what’s happening in the new Marvel comic book series “All-New Captain America,” which debuts this fall and introduces the first-ever Captain America.

Anthony Mackie, who plays Falcon in the films, hinted some months ago that he would be made Captain in the third standalone film. Either he was deliberately deceiving the fans, or Chris Evans knows something he doesn't want them to know yet. Which do you think it is?
