In one of the interviews promoting “Captain America: The First Avenger,” Chris Evans admitted that he was very nervous about playing the part. As it turns out, things might have evolved for the worse in recent months, says a new report.

The Enquirer claims in its latest print issue (story via CB) that the actor is having a very hard time coping with the pressure of fame, especially now that “The Avengers” has proved such a massive box office and critical success.

When he's working, he seems to be ok, says an unnamed friend / spy, but when he's not, he's on shaky ground.

“Chris is fine when he’s working on a movie set, but all the other stuff – the meetings, the press interviews, being asked to talk before a group – just cripple him,” the spy tells the tab.

Of course, Chris' fans must already know that he's really not that much of a fan of doing press, especially since he never made a secret of it.

The spy says it's actually worse than he made it out to be.

“He’s left events and even auditions, running away in a cold sweat. We fear Chris is going to have a nervous breakdown when he should be his happiest,” the spy explains.

To make matters even worse, Chris is supposed to start work soon on the sequels to “Captain America” and “The Avengers,” in both of which he reprises the role of the popular American hero soldier, made unbeatable with the help of technology.

If he doesn't get a grip on himself – and soon – he might not be able to pull off such a task, the spy notes.

“Chris still finds himself losing it at the most crucial times,” the insider explains.

Granted, Evans dreads the part that comes after a movie is completed and he's not the only one to feel that way.

Even his “Avengers” co-star Robert Downey Jr. recently admitted that, while an amazing actor and friend, Chris still needed to work on perfecting his “game” as a celebrity if he wanted to thrive in the industry.

From that to having a total breakdown might be quite a stretch though, we feel.
