New Jersey Governor opens up on decision to have weight loss surgery

Last week, Governor Chris Christie admitted that he had a medical procedure meant to help him lose at least some of the extra weight he was carrying. Speaking at a book launch the other day about the February procedure, he also revealed how angry and frustrated he’d become with himself.

After several, failed attempts at losing weight, Christie realized getting gastric band surgery was his only chance at a healthier, longer life, he says, as cited by The Standard.

“It’s not as simple as, ‘Push yourself away from the table and you’ll be fine’,” Christie says. He’s well aware that this goes through many people’s mind whenever they hear someone opted for weight loss surgery.

“The things that really got me down, the moments where I would say to myself, ‘Why can’t I beat this? Why can’t I do better?’, it would be when I’d be going out with Mary Pat on a Friday night or Saturday night,” he says.

Mary Pat is his wife.

“I’d be changing out of my professional clothes ... and would go to casual clothes that I didn’t wear a lot, and then something wouldn’t fit. That’s when I’d really be angry with myself,” Christie adds.

It was at that moment that he realized surgery was his solution.

Still, he insists he never minded – and never would – when people told him that he’d be “so handsome” if he lost some weight, or when people approached him to voice their concerns about his health because of his being overweight.

He doesn’t feel better after the surgery but, then again, he adds with a smile, he never did feel bad before he got it.

“I can’t sit here tonight and say I’ve had some great metamorphosis over the last 12 weeks,” Christie adds.

In time, he’ll probably come to be more aware of the health benefits of the surgical intervention.
