The nominee list for the 2010 Open Source Awards from Packt Publishing is out and a few surprises are on it.

The awards, rebranded from Best Open Source CMSs to contain a few more categories alongside CMSs like e-commerce applications, JavaScript libraries and graphic software, follows the classical pattern seen in previous years.

After a 6 weeks period in which the judges panel accepted nominations on all categories except Hall Of Fame CMS, on September 27th the official voting period began.

People are invited to consult the list and vote for their favorite application in each category.

For Best Open Source JavaScript Library, this year’s nominees are Dojo ToolKit, Ext JS, jQuery (of course), Mootools (another favorite) and the unknown Raphaël library.

The new category Best E-Commerce Application accepted nominations for self-standing e-shops and e-commerce CMS modules the same.

The community favorites Magento, OpenCart, PrestaShop were among the nominees, with new comer TomatoCart and a surprise: nopCommerce.

For the category Most Promising Open Source Project, projects no older than two years were accepted.

After the nominations were counted, BuddyPress, LiveStreet CMS, Pimcore, Tomato CMS and WolfCMS made the last five.

Finalists in the Hall of Fame CMS Award were already known, being all the former winners of the Best Overall CMS Award  from previous years.

These are Joomla, Drupal and WordPress, very well known applications for all webmasters around the world.

This year’s Best Open Source CMS Award features known projects like CMS Made Simple, MODx, SilverStripe, XOOPS and the surprisingly mojoPortal.

For the first time, Packt included a category Best Open Source Graphics Software, a category for graphics libraries, which use command line references or programming language inputs to design or edit graphics.

Nominees in this inaugural edition are Blender, GIMP, InkScape, jMonkeyEngine and Scribus.
