The Yangtze river in China is the third biggest river in the world, and locals are baffled by its color turning to red in the last few days.

The Yangtze usually has a yellowish tint, due to high concentrations of iron and a particularly sandy river bed. The river first turned red in the Chongquing area, where the Yangtze and the Jialin rivers connect.

So far, Chinese officials haven't been able to come up with an explanation for the unusual phenomenon. This may be a result of heavy pollution in the area.

Illegal sewage dumping is suspected to be the cause for the inexplicable scarlet color, but recent investigations have disproved the theory.

Of course, there are also those who are calling Yangtze “a river of blood,” viewing this as a sign of the Apocalypse, or as a prophecy of war.

Locals remain untethered, however, and are going about their business as usual.
