Strange things are known to happen every once in a while, and, as it turns out, the super-rich and super-determined of this world are the ones responsible for some of them.

Not the beat about the bush, word has it that the Chinese blue-and-white "dragon" porcelain box featured in the photo above sold for a whopping $138,178 (€101,630) at an auction in Sydney, Australia, earlier today.

What's really wacky about this piece of news is the fact that, according to auction house Bonhams, the box was only supposed to fetch about $1,000-$2,000 (€735-€1,471), Business Insider informs.

What's even wackier is that, by the looks of it, the box ended up selling for as much as it did because two super-rich Asian bidders both wanted it so badly that they kept outbidding each other until the selling price hit $138,178.

Then again, I dare say it is safe to assume these two bidders did not want the blue-and-white porcelain box quite as badly as they wanted to prove themselves to one another by flexing their bank accounts.

For the time being, the name of the bidder who got to take home the box after winning the auction in Sydney has not been shared with the general public.

One can only hope that, once they are in possession of it, they will not regret their decision to spend thousands of dollars on something about the size of a shoe box.
