An engagement gift has sparked outrage in China – a man has given his future wife $1.5 million (8.88 million yuan) in cash.

The suitor was part of a group that showed up at her home in luxury vehicles. The groom showed up in a Maserati sports car and led his entourage.

The present was bestowed in bundles of large notes placed in bamboo baskets. It took 18 people to transport the bills, which weighed a total of 102 kg (225 kg).

There was a meaning behind the sum chosen for the ceremony. The Huangs, as both the families are called, chose it because eight is a number that is supposed to attract wealth, according to Chinese tradition.

The AFP reported that bloggers were outraged over the ridiculously lavish ceremony. Many people in China are currently struggling to put food on their tables, and the event symbolizes the purchase of a wife.
