Chinese Censors Don't Want People to See 'The Departed'

While Martin Scorsese is getting a standing ovation in the US and in Europe for his latest movie, 'The Departed', China wants nothing to do with the famous director... or his work! The feature film, starring Jack Nicholson, Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon and Mark Wahlberg is a remake of the Hong Kong hit 'Infernal Affairs'.

When it opened in October in US theaters, the public was immediately won over by 'The Departed', while the critics couldn't stop praising the performances and the story. And, truth be told, it is all that one would expect from a brilliant cop story/thriller and more! It's a great story which, no matter how much it has been debated in other pics, still maintains the element of surprise and the suspense.

The list of nominees for the Golden Globes mentioned 'The Departed' many times in major categories, including 'Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role - Drama', 'Best Performance by an Actor - Drama' and 'Best Film Director'. It only won one award for the last nomination on the list. However, Martin Scorsese is still tipped as an excellent Oscar candidate, with chances to take home a statuette either for best film or best director.

But the Chinese government is opposed to the movie running in theaters. And it's not even that their objection is something that huge... no, they are upset over a couple of lines! Without being able to set the line between fiction and reality, China's censors banned 'The Departed' for including a line in which it is said that the Chinese plan to buy advanced military equipment.

A governmental source (who chose to remain anonymous because of the law that prohibits all of them to talk to the international press) confirmed the ban to Reuters. 'There is no chance "The Departed" will be shown in mainland cinemas because the U.S. side declined to change a plot line describing how Beijing wanted to buy advanced military computer hardware. That part of the plot is definitely unnecessary', the official said.

Another source, from inside the country's movie regulator, had the same story to tell Reuters: 'The regulators just cannot understand why the movie wanted to involve China. They can talk about Iran or Iraq or whatever, but there's no reason to get China in'. Although nothing was yet made public, this is as good as it gets: 'The Departed' will not be shown in China because Scorsese pissed off the wrong people.
