The plant is to be built in the waters off China's southern coastline

News from China says that the waters off the country's southern coastline will soon house the world's largest Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion (OTEC, for short) plant.

For those unaware, such plants rely on the differences in temperature between the ocean's cold bottom and relatively warm surface in order to generate electricity.

Should things go as planned, this OTEC plant set to be built in southern China is expected to have an energy generating capacity of up to 10MW, Inhabitat says.

Apart from its producing noteworthy amounts of cheap electricity, this plant is expected to yield significant benefits as far as environmental protection goes, seeing how its ecological footprint will be almost negligible when compared to that of a coal power plant, for example.

The companies working together to build this plant are Lockheed Martin and Reignwood Group. Construction is set to debut this coming year.
