China has confirmed that it's going to officially lift the ban it placed on video game consoles back in 2000, provided the devices are manufactured in the Shanghai free trade zone and are approved by the Ministry of Culture.

China is one of the biggest markets in the world but, since 2000, console manufacturers like Sony, Microsoft, or Nintendo haven't been able to sell their devices there because of a ban enforced by the government to protect children.

Now, it seems that the ban is being lifted, according to a government statement.

If companies want to sell consoles on Chinese soil, they must first set up production and sales operations in the Shanghai free trade zone. The devices must first be approved by the Ministry of Culture, however, so it's still unclear just what actual consoles can be sold on the huge market.

As of yet, none of the big companies have announced plans for China.
