Today, mobile phone users in China can grab the first Windows Phone device to officially reach their country, none other than the HTC Eternity.

Coming from Taiwanese mobile phone maker HTC Corporation, the new device will be sold unlocked in the country, with a variety of Chinese applications packed inside.

The new mobile phone arrives on shelves with a large 4.7-inch touchscreen display, while featuring both rear and front cameras.

This Windows Phone device will be followed by other handsets in the very near future. In fact, Nokia already confirmed plans to launch such smartphones on the Chinese market on March 28th, only one week from now.

“It’s also the first of many great Windows Phone handsets headed for China from Nokia and other phone makers this year. So stay tuned,” Microsoft’s Michael Stroh confirms.

“The HTC Eternity goes on sale today in China. The unlocked phone is the first of many Windows Phone handsets headed for China this year.”

Microsoft China held an event in Beijing to mark the release of Windows Phone devices in China. At the event, the company showcased the Chinese-language interface they designed for the mobile operating system.

You can have a look at some shots with the new UI in the photo attached to the left.

Of course, it shows only a generic handset, but it still delivers a taste of Windows Phone in simplified Chinese. According to Microsoft, Windows Phone arrives in the country with support for traditional Chinese as well.

“Our engineering and design teams really sweated the details, working hard to create a version of the software that both showcases the inherent beauty of Chinese characters and excites Chinese customers. We can’t wait until they get their hands on it,” Michael Stroh continues.

While HTC’s new smartphone got launched in China unlocked, Nokia’s devices are expected to land on the airwaves of the country’s largest wireless carriers.
