The country is at the top of the PC chain on an annual basis

China was an emerging market for a while, but that status was surprisingly short lived. Or perhaps not so surprisingly, given the huge population and its tendency to work overtime.

Whatever the reason was, the country actually ascended to the top in terms of PC shipments in 2012.

That's right, China reached the top of the PC market last year, with shipments of 69 million units.

Desktops and laptops were, surprisingly, on par with 50%-50% split. A stark contrast to the rest of the world, where notebook eclipsed the other category.

That said, US is now second place holder, having managed to reach 66 million.

China still has a vast rural market largely untapped, according to analyst firm iSupply, so I can only assume that sales will only go up over the coming years.
