A whopping $17 billion (€12.85 billion) is to be spend on building several river dams in Indonesia's North Kalimantan province on the island of Borneo.

Greenheads are not exactly thrilled by the idea, but the Indonesian government appears to be very supportive of the project.

The two Chinese companies that are to cough out the $17 billion and spend it on building dams in this part of Indonesia are China Power Investment Corporation and Anhui Conch Cement. Mongabay reports that, according to engineers and specialists working with these two companies, the hydropower plants built as part of this project will have a combined energy generating capacity of 7,000 megawatts.

The same source informs us that, should things go as planned, work on the first of these dams will begin in 2014, once both a feasibility and an environmental assessment impact study are carried out.
