Children of Morta is an upcoming story-driven hack-and-slash game with a heavy roguelike flavor, where you get to play as a family guarding their mountain from an unspeakable evil.

Developer Deadmage is currently undergoing a crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter, aiming to secure the necessary funds to finish the game and maybe even add something extra.

The game follows the story of a family of guardians that bands and takes on a newfound evil presence corrupting their beautiful mountain and lands, and offers players a wondrous journey through a world of fantasy and mystery.

The Bergson family has lived on the outskirts of Mount Morta for generations, but as a tragic event corrupts the roots of life deep within the mountain, turning all creatures into mindless monsters, they become the only hope to cleanse the land and restore the natural balance.

One of the game's strong points is the 2.5D pixel art aesthetic, that looks great due to the usage of a few modern lighting and rendering technique, offering a vivid and visually engrossing experience.

An interesting melange of gameplay mechanics

The game blends mechanics from indie hits like Rogue Legacy, Risk of Rain and The Binding of Isaac, and offers a novel narrative focus, delivering a rich story comprised of a specific narrative arc and a multitude of random events.

Children of Morta also includes a crafting system that lets you make various items and potions, and offers an endless number of procedurally generated dungeons to enjoy.

If you want to meet the cast and see some rather lovely gifs, visit the project's page on Kickstarter.

The game is being built for Windows, Mac and Linux, but the developers are also eyeing PlayStation, Xbox and Wii U as potential candidates.
