There used to be a time when every kid out there wanted to own a Nintendo. But that’s so yesterday’s news and the 3DS has inevitably fallen from grace, as children have found another gaming darling that’s much more appealing to their alert senses.

New data offered by Futuresource Consulting (as seen at Mcv UK) claims tablets have dethroned Nintendo’s 3DS as the most popular personal gaming device for children. Well, at least as far as UK goes, so there’s still hope for Nintendo in other territories.

Tablet gaming is improving at a fast rate and threatens to put handheld consoles out of business.

After all, there are countless tablet products destined for children that double as full-fledged Android tablets for adults, so parents will be killing two birds with one stone if they purchase such a product – they get a tablet for themselves and a gaming device for the little one.

The study found that 44% of children in the UK aged between 3 and 12 currently own a tablet, while 30% of those aged between 3 to 4 have one, as well. However, children above 9 seem to be more into smartphones.

Interestingly enough, parents are more than supportive of their children’s love of tablets and the research claims they end up paying over £100 / $170 / €125 on mobile fees.
