How bad is the web?

Certainly, I'm in no position to tell parents how to raise their children, but I can surely say a lot about what dangers lurk around on the Web. Cyber-security is not an issue for kids to handle, but parents should seriously think about it, when letting the little ones surf the Net. Now besides the fact that children will tend to spend more time online than outside playing, there are other perils kids face in cyber-space!

Web Content - a lot of nasty stuff is going on over the Internet. And when I say "nasty", porn is the least of my worries. Boys will eventually take up interest in porn, before they reach 14, and you know it, if they won't get it from the web, they'll ask an older friend to buy an adult magazine. That's why porn isn't the worst thing on the web. The really bad thing out there is the stuff from sites like Ogrish (now Liveleak) that can really disturb a child's mind. Also spam is pretty dangerous, as children don't know much about cyber-security and might end up with their computers infected.

Keep in mind that kids don't know much about piracy, DRM and stuff like that and they might be prone to infringing copyrights, by downloading MP3s and similar material. But, to get back to the porn issue, having adware on your computer is really bad - imagine your kid starting up the machine and a window with hardcore stuff popping up. Some porn scenes freak out adults - imagine what they could do to a child's mind! This is why, when protecting your kid, you need to deploy anti-adware, pop-up blockers; creating a blacklist is also recommended. Like I said, the gory stuff is probably the worst, so it needs to be blocked! Security is important for everyone, but it's crucial when letting kids surf the Internet!
