Suspects opened fire on people on a basketball court in Chicago’s South Side the other day, injuring 13 people, among which a 3-year-old boy. All injuries are not life-threatening, but Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy says such incidents are easily preventable.

In the press statement after the shooting, he describes it as most likely gang-related. An “assault-style rifle with a high capacity magazine” was used, based on evidence and information gathered at the scene.

Given the type of gun used, “it’s a miracle in this instance there were no fatalities,” McCarthy says.

He also says that this incident should be a wake-up call for authorities, to take active measures as regards gun control.

“Illegal guns drive violence and military-style weapons, such as the one used in this attack, belong on the battlefield and not on the street, or on the corner of a park,” he explains.

Police are still looking for the suspects.
