Staff at Chester Zoo in the UK has recently announced the birth of a baby Pudu. The tiny deer weighed merely 900 grams (almost 2 pounds) at birth, and will remain fairly small for the rest of its life.

This is because Pudus are the smallest deer in the world. More precisely, adults typically grow no bigger than 15 inches (38 centimeters) tall at the shoulders, sources say.

Despite their size, these deer are surprisingly resilient. What's more, they've learned to use their wits rather than their size to escape their natural predators.

“Despite being small in stature, Pudu are very, very good sprinters. And what they lack in size, they make up for in strategy – running in zigzags to try and escape from less nimble predators,” zoo employee Sarah Roffe reportedly told the press.

The fawn now living as Chester Zoo was born on June 19 to mother Serena and dad Odin.

Since the species is considered to be an endangered one, its birth was celebrated by conservationists worldwide.
