Cherry is a band you're most likely to hear or read about when looking through the specifications of high-end peripherals, specifically keyboards. This is because they are the ones who make the best key switches.

That doesn't mean their business is solely dependent on others' designs though. While the bulk of their revenue does come from sales of peripherals belonging to other companies, Cherry nonetheless has its own products up for consumer order as well.

One of those products has just been introduced and bears the name of MX Board 6.0.

The Cherry MX Board 6.0

For a gaming peripheral, the name doesn't exactly imply much about the product, not even some sort of grand destiny like if the moniker had included a big word like “Titan,” or “Phoenix.”

Then again, being quiet and practical seems to be closer to Cherry's assumed motto than anything, since both the outer shell and inner workings are geared towards effectiveness and longevity rather than visual embellishments.

There is a backlight, granted, but that's as functional as it is good looking. Although we'll leave it to you to decide if the predominantly red color is easy on the eyes. At least some keys are colored blue.

MX Board 6.0 uses Cherry's latest switches, so you can expect them to be totally silent while still providing good tactile feedback.

The RealKey technology also deserves a special mention, as it uses the wide bandwidth of USB 3.0 technology to reduce latency. It's a big part of why there is 100% N-key rollover, meaning that no matter how many keys you press at once, the system won't trip on its own signals.

Because of all this, Cherry is aiming the peripheral at software developers, professional typists and gamers.

The ingot-shaped design, the metal body and the 102-keyset should make it well suited for all those possible buyers. You can even magnetically attach a palm rest if it's the sort of thing you're comfortable with.

Availability and pricing

Cherry has decided on a price of $219 / €185 for the MX Board 6.0 and intends to start sales this spring, which can mean anything from March to May. Probably the earlier points in that period though, given the paper launch now. The product will be backed by a 3-year warranty.
