Greenpeace said more than 90,000 people are likely to die of cancers caused by radiation from the Chernobyl explosion, 10 times more than a previous U.N. report had predicted.

Based on research by the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus, the reported noted that, out of the 2 billion people affected by the Chernobyl incident, 270,000 will develop cancer, disease fatal for 93,000 of them.

The blast from April 26, 1986 sent to northern and western Europe, reaching even the
eastern United States. "The nuclear industry is the most dangerous in the world, and they are definitely trying to minimize the results of the Chernobyl catastrophe," said Ivan Blokov of Greenpeace's Russia office. "We have a report showing the incredible damage caused to humans ... Nearly every system of the organism is damaged."

The report also mentions that 200,000 people in Russia, Ukraine and Belarus could have died from cardiovascular diseases linked to the disaster. Also, the incidence for cancer in Belarus increased 40% between 1990 and 2000.

Greenpeace accused International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the U.N. nuclear watchdog, of minimizing the effects of the most serious nuclear incident ever. An IAEA official rejected these accusations, saying its responsibility was only to study the environmental impact, the problem of the casualties remaining up to the World Health Organization.

Many of the incident's consequences still remain difficult to identify, especially the economic depression and unhealthy lifestyles, such as drinking and smoking, very common in the region.

"The Chernobyl accident disrupted whole societies in Belarus, Ukraine and Russia," Greenpeace concluded.
