Freedom Industries, the company responsible for the chemical spill that left some 300,000 people in West Virginia, US without access to tap water for several days in a row, has released a new estimate concerning how much MCHM and PPH spilled from its storage tank.

As it turns out, a greater amount of said chemical compounds than initially reported hit the environment earlier this month.

More precisely, it would appear that, instead of 7,500 gallons of MCHM and PPH, as Freedom Industries said at first, the storage tank leaked about 10,000 gallons of these two chemical compounds, Huffington Post tells us.

Interestingly enough, it would appear that Freedom Industries is still trying to determine exactly how much of the brew made it all the way into Elk River.

The West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection stresses that, regardless of how many gallons spilled from the storage tank, officials and specialists are doing their best to keep the damage caused by this incident at a minimum.

“This new calculation does not change any of our protocols in dealing with this spill, nor does it affect the ongoing remediation efforts.”

“Our actions have never been dependent on what Freedom has reported to us. From the start, we have acted aggressively to contain the spill and remediate the site,” Secretary Randy Huffman said in a statement.
