When one says the world drones, both fear and wonder tends to be conjured, especially since some believe these are machines to be manipulated by the government and used for spying activities or worse.

But drones can be wonderful tools, too, to be used to achieve all sorts of creative goals. The folks over at National Geographic have just announced the winners of the Dronestagram photo contest, which show us the wide possibilities of drone photography.

The contest had over 2,000 submissions and they all depict the beautiful world as seen from above using atypical angles. The photo depicting a “Mexican waterfall” has received the prize for the “most liked.”

The winning photograph depicts a vulture flying, but one has to wonder if the drone didn't scare the bird when approaching so closely to it. Such concerns have prompted the US National Park service to ban drones, while North Carolina prohibits their use for hunting or finishing activities.

However, this is not to say the use of drones should be totally prohibited, as drones could find uses beyond artistic purposes of any kind, like being used for search-and-rescue operations or for documentation purposes.

Anyway, check out the beautiful gallery of drone-imagery to see the other pictures which made an impression on the judges.
