As I’ve told you not a long time ago, Microsoft is planning to release several Start Screen improvements in the upcoming Windows 8.1 release, including UI customization settings.

It turns out that the company might even release some new options to let consumers use the desktop wallpaper as a background for the Start Screen, in an attempt to make the transition from the desktop to the Metro UI a bit smoother.

In addition, sources familiar with the matter have hinted that the Start Screen would be tweaked in such a way that it might act more like a Start Menu. Dedicated options to arrange live tiles by usage might be implemented too, especially because a Start button is very likely to be introduced.

Microsoft has, of course, refused to comment on future plans, so more details are expected to be provided in the coming weeks ahead of the public preview’s unveiling at the BUILD developer conference.
