US photographer builds a fun, creative camera

Every year we celebrate Halloween on October 31, but some are bigger fans than others. For example, I rarely even bother to put a costume on, but photographer Nic Persinger has a different idea about having fun with the spirits on the last day of October.

He wanted to do something special, so to that end he put his mind to work and created a DIY pumpkin camera which takes advantage of a Polaroid camera on the back and a Holga lens.

Photographer gets creative for Halloween

Carving out pumpkins so you can keep the evil spirits at bay is a fun Hollywood tradition, apart from dressing yourself in costumes representing evil spirits and witches.

But photographers are usually creative people and that’s exactly the case of Nic Persinger who decided to blend his passion for photo snapping and the scary holiday into one thing.

The result of the project is a functional Polaroid capable of living in the body of the pumpkin, so the concoction can be used to snap photographs in real life (as seen at Photojojo).

To create his masterpiece, Nic Persinger explains he outfitted his Polaroid pumpkin camera with a back available for Polaroid SF film cameras plus a Holga 60mm f/8 lens.

Persinger says he is satisfied with the results, but he points out that the resulted photographs bear an orange tint, but this is natural since the pumpkin is orange.

Persinger got inspired to make this camera when he received an invitation to go to a pumpkin carving party. So why not make a fully functional camera that lives in the pumpkin and can even shoot images of the evil spirits as they approach your porch (we jest!)

The Polaroid pumpkin camera is actually a film camera

Our fun-loving photographer says he is a “film photographer” by trade so that’s why his DIY project consists of a larger film camera.

It would also be interesting to see a camera squeezed in a smaller pumpkin, maybe a compact or a mirrorless you could take out of your pocket and snap a few fun images while you’re at it.

The artist is based in Morgantown, West Virginia, and is pretty well known in the area for his work, which was exhibited in art galleries and in magazines.

If you are curious to see more of his work, we invite you to go check out the Nic Persinger official website. There’s a dedicated gallery of Polaroid photography for those of you who enjoy this type of artistic expression.
